Architects: FORM/Kouichi Kimura Architects
Location: Shiga, Japan
Client: Private
Construction Year: 2010
Site Area: 166,21 sqm
Constructed Area: 116,06 sqm
Project Year: 2010
Photographs: Takumi Ota

This is the house for a young couple and their child.

The client had a longing for the traditional Japanese folk dwellings, and desired to take advantage of the surrounding bountiful idyll in the new house.

ground floor plan

We planned in the center of the first floor a spacious foyer that functions as a semi-exterior area.

© Takumi Ota

This space, which evokes relation between the DOMA (dirt floor) and ZA (habitable space floor) often seen in the old Japanese folk dwellings, is connected with the couple’s bedroom, child room, bathroom, and stairway to the second floor. It plays a role as the core of the flow line inside the house, and can be used in a variety of ways in accordance with the client’s needs.

© Takumi Ota

The living room, dining room, and kitchen are laid out on the second floor.

We designed so that the line of sight is led by colors and lights when you go upstairs, to the idyllic scenery that spreads outside the opening.

© Takumi Ota

The house, though it may be compact, integrates diversified and productive spaces produced by various materials and colors, in its minimal volume that blends in with the idyll.

The goal, here, is to sublimate qualities and the feelings already present on the spot. The large gate is the basic element which generates the entire project: its symmetrical is deferred on the northern frontage generating a crossing tube of light. The limit between outside and interior disappears, operating the fusion of nature and built.

The space of the ground thus illuminated contrast with the higher level which rather seeks the introversion and the shade to him. Two worlds cohabit, consequently how to consider their connection? It is the deformation of the higher floor which, conceptually, comes to find the ground and operates this transition.

section 01

Intervening in a typical habitation of the Oporto urban tissue it’s by itself a reason for the memory theme run through our thought, as the memory itself begins to delineate like a program, a “tool” capable of function as a moderator element between the “old” and the “new”.

This project tries to recreate the habitation spaces (an element per se container and generator of memories), preserving the identity of the architectonic object already existent, but with a greater cosmopolitan and contemporaneous touch, searching a symbiosis between two languages chronologically distant, intending  to create an “actualized” architectonic object belonging to the sensorial universe of this place from Porto city.
