Bigger is Better

2 Jun

{Buckingham ID}

Have you noticed oversized wall decor popping up all over magazines, website, magazines, designer’s projects, the blogsphere…etc?  This trend seems to indicate that larger is better at the moment, or at least the customer/client favors the big and the bold.  From paintings to mirrors to series of framed photographs and unique pieces of wall art, oversized wall decor is very chic without being too trendy.  I think this decor may stick around for a while, and even if you hop on the bandwagon now, it won’t likely be passe by this time next year.  It seems to be especially popular in the dining room.  Is there that one wall adjacent to your table that just doesn’t seem to get it right?  Try out a larger than life piece of decor…it just might be the solution to your wall problem!

Modern Art

20 Apr

Often times you’ll look around your room and wonder what’s missing.  The furniture is there, the window treatments are up, the rug is down and it’s feeling cozy but not quite complete.  Chances are you’re missing the one element that brings it all together.  ART!  I’ve been eyeing this one photograph in a small coffee shop on Bleeker Street and I’m just waiting for the perfect client to sell it to.  It’s by photographer Frank Louis and can be found in his Italy collection.

I also have a client who recently purchased a few David Burdeny prints from Lumas gallery in NYC which you can also buy online.  Take a look at his collection to see which colors work best with your decor.

I found a few addtional artists and photographs i also like from Lumas Gallery for those of you who want a modern edge!

I love this last series for a beach house

© Leonardo Finotti

Architect: Guilherme Machado Vaz
Location: Matosinhos, Portugal
Client: Câmara Municipal Matosinhos
Engineering: Carla Martins
Project Year: 2007
Construction Year: 2008-2009
Photographs: Leonardo Finotti

This building supports a big Parking lot that once a year is used as a fair ground. It functions as a spacial reference in the vast parking field.

site plan

The design explores the concept of inside and outside as well as core and shell. That is translated in it’s fractured form which emphasizes in a cromatic way this idea. To bring this inside space to open air makes it a place where people meet, a meeting point, and also a place from where they can Access its public services.

A third building, not fractured, makes the idea stronger and enhances the contrast of the whole.

Haus M / Titus Bernhard Architects

1 Apr

© Jens Weber & Orla Conolly

Architects: Titus Bernhard Architekten BDA
Location: Grünwald, Germany
Client: Private
Project Year: 2009
Photographs: Jens Weber, Orla Conolly, München

diagrams

The distinctive feature of the property lies in its north-facing slope, which has to be negotiated over two storeys to reach the almost flat garden level. This gives rise to the leitmotiv of a “house winding up the slope”, with a quarry-stone façade which is corresponding to the ultrathin Frames of the façade.

© Jens Weber & Orla Conolly

Despite its complex geometry, the house is organised in clearly perceivable zones, based initially on additive modules of 7.80 by 7.80 metres. Lighting plays a particularly important role. Lateral light from the south and west and overhead light in the north and east sections make systematic use of shadow and diffuse light.

House of Integration / FORM | Kouichi Kimura

© Takumi Ota

Architects: FORM/Kouichi Kimura Architects
Location: Shiga, Japan
Client: Private
Construction Year: 2010
Site Area: 166,21 sqm
Constructed Area: 116,06 sqm
Project Year: 2010
Photographs: Takumi Ota

This is the house for a young couple and their child.

The client had a longing for the traditional Japanese folk dwellings, and desired to take advantage of the surrounding bountiful idyll in the new house.

ground floor plan

We planned in the center of the first floor a spacious foyer that functions as a semi-exterior area.

© Takumi Ota

This space, which evokes relation between the DOMA (dirt floor) and ZA (habitable space floor) often seen in the old Japanese folk dwellings, is connected with the couple’s bedroom, child room, bathroom, and stairway to the second floor. It plays a role as the core of the flow line inside the house, and can be used in a variety of ways in accordance with the client’s needs.

© Takumi Ota

The living room, dining room, and kitchen are laid out on the second floor.

We designed so that the line of sight is led by colors and lights when you go upstairs, to the idyllic scenery that spreads outside the opening.

© Takumi Ota

The house, though it may be compact, integrates diversified and productive spaces produced by various materials and colors, in its minimal volume that blends in with the idyll.

Architect: Atelier Archiplein
Location: Rochebaudin, France
Client: Mauricette Tracol
Project Area: 220 sqm
Budget: 300,000 euros
Project year: 2008

The goal, here, is to sublimate qualities and the feelings already present on the spot. The large gate is the basic element which generates the entire project: its symmetrical is deferred on the northern frontage generating a crossing tube of light. The limit between outside and interior disappears, operating the fusion of nature and built.

The space of the ground thus illuminated contrast with the higher level which rather seeks the introversion and the shade to him. Two worlds cohabit, consequently how to consider their connection? It is the deformation of the higher floor which, conceptually, comes to find the ground and operates this transition.
