Fish House Built on Water Takes Eco-friendliness to the Max

9 Aug

If you love water and nature in general then you’ll love the Fish House in the pictures below. Designed by Guz Architects in Singapore, this spacious house seems to be built on water and it’s definitely fun to live in. Besides the impressive pool that seems to endlessly revolve around the Fish House, you also have a spectacular view of the ocean that’s just outside. Moving on we find a great interior dominated by wood finishing and plenty of natural light that comes in through those impressive windows. And yes, that’s a green patch of grass on top of the Fish House that will let you enjoy some time outdoors without actually leaving this ingeniously designed house. So if you live in Singapore and you’re looking for a great house idea then I think this Fish House on the beach is just what the doctor ordered. Via Guz Architects

Edible Schoolyard / Work AC

22 Jan

Work AC, in collaboration with Edible Schoolyard NY and the Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse Foundation, is designing a new schoolyard for PS216 that will offer the young New Yorkers a different learning experience.   The Edible Schoolyard is designed as a series of interlinked sustainable systems where the building will produce energy and heat, collect rainwater, process compost and sort waste with an off-grid infrastructure.

More images and more about the school after the break.

The school includes a kitchen classroom and mobile greenhouse where children are brought together in a learning environment that also promotes eco-friendliness. The roof of the kitchen classroom, a room that provides the facilities for up to 30 students to prepare meals together, channels rain water for reclamation.  The mobile greenhouse extends the growing season by covering 1600sf of soil in the colder months and gardens will allow the children to care for plants.

A systems wall, a series of spaces that include a cistern, space for composting and waste-sorting, solar batteries, dishwashing facilities, a tool shed and a chicken coop, rests on the opposite side of the yard.

The project is a great way to introduce sustainable methods into children’s lives at an early age.   The “edible” element will definitely pique children’s interests and help the next generation realize the importance of the eco-friendly movement.

Schwimmhaus, a Compact Modern Houseboat

8 Nov

Crafted with outmost elegance by German architects Confused-Direction, Schwimmhaus is a compact modern houseboat that keeps in tune with the tranquil environment that it ventures into. Built with eco-friendliness in mind, the houseboat sports a green roof and is being fabricated out of salvaged wood from an old farm house in addition to other sustainable building materials. Set for completion this spring, an inflatable model of Schwimmhaus threads the waters of Hunte River for now. The interiors of this green houseboat are also crafted to match the simple yet ergonomic style of the boat and the sustainable design the project aims to achieve. – via Inhabitat

Latest Seoul Major Tourist Attraction : Banpo Bridge

22 Oct

Just a twist of design, a splattering of paint, a cheeky addition to something old can make it look brightly cheerful and attractive to the eyes again. The Banpo Bridge which crosses over the Han River in the Seoul capital of Korea has been given new life with the addition of a very interesting fountain, that was specially designed to attract more tourists. Instead of remodeling this huge structure to fit it with the usual design of a fountain, even that has been give some change, with the fountain shooting water downwards instead of up.

The fountains at the Banpo Bridge were installed on September ninth and have since become a major tourist attraction. It has nearly 10 thousand nozzles ( more exactly 9, 380 ) on either side of the bridge that shoots out 190 tons of water every minute. According to the Seoul mayor, Oh Se-Hoon, the fountain bridge would help acknowledge Seoul as an eco-friendly destination amassing more tourists. But unless the fountain is being used as a means of harnessing energy, the eco-friendliness of this fountain is skeptical.

Finally for those of you who want more than a few pictures, here is a video with this new project in action. I’ve noticed that for some people the video is not available due to country restrictions, but you can see it here using a proxy.
