Style of Design

Juranda House comes from Apiacás Arquitetos and is located in Vila Beatriz, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The residence has 150 square meters and is a fascinating display of comfort, traditional design and cost efficiency. The architects tried to keep the construction budget to a minimum and ensure a great indoor-outdoor connection by making the building as transparent as possible. You have the house sketches for the ground floor, the first level and the roof in the photos below in case you are interesting in taking a closer look at the building plans.As for the construction materials, the architects stated that “the house is given structure by steel reinforced concrete cast on site with the slabs in prefabricated concrete remaining visible after construction. All of the brickwork is in ceramic blocks covered with a white render. We opted to put all of the house’s infrastructure on the lowest floor, making use of the nature slope, this includes: a water cistern, boiler and sewage treatment system.” We challenge you to let us know what you think of the interior design of this residence and if there are any items that you consider intriguing.

Here is an interesting contemporary residence that caught our attention from Pitagoras Architects. Located in Guimarães, Portugal, this modern project had to be integrated within its unleveled landscape and “defeat its accentuated slope”. The residence has three floors, but only two of them are above ground. A strong indoor outdoor connection was the main objective when planning this project Here is a small description from the architects: “All floors are contemplated with covered or uncovered verandas and patios that are closed off or open to the landscape, creating variable possibilities of inhabiting spaces, taking advantage of the light and scenery that change with the different seasons. Thus, the dense white volume acquires, with its large openings and differentiating materials, contrasting hollows.” An impressive pool turns this house into a fun and entertaining crib, aside from being extremely functional.

Once in a while Furniture Fashion pays homage to outstanding architecture and interior design, and often we find the perfect combination of these elements is some of the most exotic luxury resorts around the world. The Rosewood Mayakoba is situated along a mile long strip of white Caribbean sand on the Riviera Maya and is the center of a 1,600 acre luxury resort enclave located south of Cancun and north of the seaside village of Playa del Carmen. The stunning interior and exterior pictures are what made this luxury resort 18th on Travel and Leisure’s list of “World Best Awards” last year. Craig Steely Architecture is a studio based in San Francisco that combines “formal elegance with classic modernist tradition”. Beaver Street Reprise is said to be “a conceptually modern house that fits contextually into a Victorian neighborhood”. We think this projects is daring and stands out due to its beautiful wooden exterior design and the dashing indoor arrangements. Bright colors, amazing furniture and decorations contribute to the distinctive personality that this residence obviously has. A few elements draw attention, such as the suspended fireplace or the unusual coffee table.  Beaver Street Reprise houses an all-equipped apartment, an office, a wide living area, and a deck. Definitely a nice way to embrace contemporaneity in design.

We know you are used to seeing articles about interior design & architecture on Freshome, but today we decided to spice up our posts and present something different, but intriguing nevertheless ( tell us if you like to see this kind of stuff from time to time ). British designer Thomas Heatherwick has created a design alternative for London’s iconic Routemaster bus together with The Wright Group. The famous double-decker will be out on the London streets by 2012. We also know that it uses the latest in green technology and lightweight materials. Here is a statement from London’s mayor, Boris Johnson: “This iconic new part of our transport system will cut emissions, and give Londoners a bus they can be proud of, complete with cutting edge design, and the freedom of an open platform.”  This project is very much related to design- just not in the way you guys got used to- which is why we are very interested in finding out your opinions on this new type of approach.-via Dezeen

No matter how much we try, we just can’t find anything wrong with this home. Might be just the abundant use of white, but it looks impeccable. Located in Cadiz, Spain, Sotogrande House is yet another success of A-cero Architects, a name which has in time become similar with high quality architecture. The project features a couple of king-size bedrooms, an all equipped kitchen and large en-suite bathrooms. The interiors are modern, spacious and… white. Even the stairs are in tune with the color profile. Interesting furniture elements freshen up the rooms.  A large pool with contemporary outdoor furniture on the side completes this home’s dreamy appearance. -via Homedit

The Pritzker will be announced in a few minutes. It will probably go to one of the figures you have already voted for in our 2010 Pritzker poll, but deep in our hearts we wish Architecture for Humanity to be awarded.

With the purpose of the Prize being “to honor a living architect whose built work demostrates a combination of those qualities of talent, vision, and commitment, which has produced a consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture“, don´t you agree with me?

Anyway, Architecture for Humanity has been awarded with the 2010 IIDA Pioneers in Design Award, and we congratulate them once again.

Let’s hope we can probe Cameron Sinclair wrong in the future:

Cottesloe House comes from by Paul Burnham Architect and is located in Perth, Western Australia, in the beach side suburb of Cottesloe. We appreciate the diversity of its exterior design, with the unusual architecture twists. Inside you will notice that most of the rooms are connected, while showing off  a contemporary feel. Here is a statement from the architects regarding the project: “Concrete is a recurring theme throughout the house in recognition of the owners’ occupation and willingness to engage alternate methods of construction and finishes. The successful aspects of the property appear to be the sense of privacy, the consistency of light quality and the uplifting sensation from the significant winter sunlight penetration throughout the building.” Like what you see?

Located in Garby, a place near Poznan, Poland, this original residential project belongs to NeoStudio Architekci, a company with a very inviting portfolio. We called the house “fun and fantastic” because we were fascinated by its design creativity. The architecture is simple and stylish, featuring elements that are not at all common and shaped around a two-level living-room. Large windows offer unobstructed views of the natural surroundings. The white stone walls give it a rustic feel and integrates it well in its environment. The interior is packed full with interesting and fresh design ideas. Unusual furniture and dramatic shapes blend into a dynamic and modern living area.-via Arch Daily
