Unusual Looking Residence in Slovakia : Dom Zlomu

5 Sep

This unusual looking residence comes from Paulíny Hovorka Architekti and is situated in the small village of Kynceľová, close to the town  of Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. The house has a beautiful natural surrounding landscape and overlooks the Tatra mountains. You probably wonder how come this home has such a strange shape. At first this is what got our attention also and we checked into it. We found out that the client wanted a single storey construction and a maximum amount of natural daylight. But due to the unfriendly circumstances (“the unusual shape and eastward sloping of the site”), the architects came up with a unique plan: an “L”-shaped building with a large and impressive residential floor sustained by a smaller ground level. The first floor hosts all the living spaces- split into day and night, while the ground level houses the garage and the ancillary rooms. We particularly like the way the upper level is cantilevered towards the street and we believe this is one of the strong features of this home’s architecture.

Hive Bookcase Will Awake Your Reading Passion

3 Sep

Bookcases shouldn’t just be efficient storage solutions for your favorite books, especially with all the smart designs available out there. Such is the case with the Hive, a great bookcase ready to shelter most of your books. The Hive Bookcase is “inspired by both the natural shelter build by bees and traditional forms of Arab Andalusian architecture” and it will certainly awake your reading passion. The Hive is not only a great piece of furniture but also a great separator between two different areas of a studio as its shelves are accessible from both sides. Each storage unit has a hexagonal shape and will definitely let you store other items besides books, although such a creation should be a book-only piece of furniture. Via Darenart

Glamorous Glass Pavilion Residence in California

26 Aug

The Glass Pavilion Residence comes from Steve Hermann and is a showcase of seemingly infinite approaches to modern living. The project is located in Montecito, California, even though its architecture first got us thinking that this was an European building. This home’s exterior looks spectacular, with its rectangular shape, large open living area and interesting artful wall details. We also like the white stone passageway that acts as a directing “arrow”, leading the guests inside. This residence is not at all similar to common two or three floor contemporary homes, but is composed of one level above the ground and a garage beneath it, that houses a nail-bighting collection of sport and vintage cars. Its interior spells “modern” and features impressive furniture arrangements and inspiring decorating ideas.-via Decoist

Family House With A Very Warm Feel In California

11 Aug

Here is a residence that inspires a homey and very friendly feel. We imagine this is the sort of place that gives the definition of “neighborly attraction”. With a highly interesting architecture, the Korman Residence by Cory Buckner Architects is located in Brentwood, California. This house was built for a family with two daughters and a bulldog which is also considered an important household member. The brief of the project was to create a second level for an existing building and also to do an entire home remodeling. So the architects completely turned around the overall look of the former project which was partially demolished. They created a second story with a master suite, an office and a painting studio and reconfigured the design of the whole construction. What do you think of the final results?

Villa Mecklin, Surprising Architecture Within A Rocky Landscape

11 Aug

Villa Mecklin was designed by  Huttunen–Lipasti–Pakkanen Architects and is located in Naantali, Finland. Its highly original architecture got our attention and we are looking forward to your impressions as well. The rocky construction site is both beautiful and tricky but apparently the building process was not at all negatively influenced by the terrain. In fact, after a good research, everything worked according to plan. We particularly like the wooden platform which can be used in many creative and practical ways. Here is some information from the architects: “The main building sits in a small depression in the rock, its sheltered terrace extending over the summit of the rock. One arrives from the harbour to the entrance of the main building sheltered by the trees. After a descent of a couple of steps, the expansive landscape of the western shore, with its long vistas, unfolds. A fireplace has been sunk into the centre of the large terrace, accessed via a hatch in the decking. When the fire is not lit and the hatch is in place, it is possible to use the whole terrace as, for example, a dance floor. In connection with the shoreline sauna, there is also a stove-heated cabin for guests.

Summer Beach House on Fire Island, New York

10 Aug

We know some of you guys enjoy beach home designs so here is an interesting project from Studio27 Architecture located on Fire Island in New York. We’ve heard that all houses in the Pines of Fire region have a similar architecture which is said to reflect the pragmatism of the local community and are easily recognizable due to this factor. However, the architects said they tried to add a little extra “spirit of the shore”  to this particular project and make it stand out. Built from woven cedar boards, the residence has a warm and friendly feel. Its exterior looks quite inviting, particularly the pool area with the beautiful furniture additions. The surrounding trees offer a convenient amount of shade while cheering up the atmosphere. The interiors have a contemporary design and feature modern arrangements.
